Australia prepares to prohibit live wagering chances during sports betting

Australia has unveiled plans to ban tv and radio broadcasts of sports betting odds during live sports betting matches in a bid to curb problem gambling.
Gambling ads will no longer appear during live events and around sporting venues, the federal government stated.
Prime Minister Julia Gillard stated Australians had become "progressively frustrated" with the promos.
The broadcasting industry is expected to submit a modified code to Australia's media guard dog reflecting the changes.
"From the moment that the gamers step onto the field, to the minute that they leave the field, there will be no live odds," Ms Gillard told a press conference.
"This is good news for families, since households I believe have become increasingly annoyed about the penetration of live odds into sporting protection."
Under the brand-new guidelines, advertisements would just be allowed before or after a game, or during a set up break in play, such as quarter-time and .
'Focus of video game'
Promotion of wagering odds by bookmakers who seem part of broadcast groups will also be banned.
The National Rugby League, which in the past has enabled bookies to offer odds during broadcasts, stated it agreed with the government's plan.
"The frustrating belief is that we do not desire to see wagering as the primary focus of our video game," NRL president Dave Smith stated.
"Fans, and particularly young fans, must not undergo extreme promo of sports betting during matches.
"We want young kids to be taking pleasure in the skills of their preferred group, not estimating the odds."
The broadcasting industry is expected to submit a revised code to the Australian Communications and Media Authority, said the federal government.
It estimates that up to 500,000 Australians are at threat of ending up being, or are, problem gamblers.
